garden brightIMG_0302 (1)

Welcome to The Garden State Afghan Crochet A Long.  I designed this afghan in 2013 but recently made some minor changes and added a new border suggestion.  The pattern will be released for free over a period of 8 weeks here on the blog and on Ravelry with coupon code #JULIEYEAGERGARDEN (expires June 30, 2016.)  Please use #JULIEYEAGERGARDEN to tag your photos as well.  Please chat about the pattern on my Ravelry Board and on my Facebook CAL page.  (If this link doesn’t work, please put  “Crochet A Long with JulieAnny” in your Facebook search box.)  We have over 6000 members and all are welcome!  See all my designs in my Ravelry Store, Etsy shop, and on Loveknitting.com.  Yarn Pack in the Suggested Scheepjes Stone Washed XL still available at Deramores.  Thanks to Iris van Meer for her Dutch Translation of the pattern which you can follow on her blog and will also be available on Ravelry.

The Garden State Afghan

By Julie Yeager Designs

Pattern uses American crochet terms.

The Garden State Afghan reflects a profusion of flowers scattered across the grass.  Constructed in three sizes of portable squares, crocheting your afghan will provide you with hours of enjoyment as you let your creative powers flow.

There are 14 separate patterns, and each pattern is repeated four times.  If you are using the suggested yarn, follow instructions for color changes, but if you are using stash and less concerned with amounts, just use Main Color (MC) when called for.  Since the last revision, a few changes were made to help the blocks fit together more easily.  Stitch counts are designed to fit together perfectly.

Materials

Suggested Yarn:  Scheepjes Stone Washed XL (75 meters per 50 g skein)

A:  Carnelian, 4 skeins       B:  Canada Jade, 3 skeins       C: New Jade, 2 skeins    D:  Rose Quartz, 3 skeins    E:  Pink Quartzite, 3 skeins           MC:  Amazonite, 20 skeins

Suggested Hook Size:  Size J (6.0 mm), or whatever size gives you a pleasing fabric;          Stitch Marker

Ch-3 at the beginning of a round counts as a dc; ch-4 at the beginning of a round counts as a tr, ch-2 at the beginning of a round counts as a hdc.  Magic ring and standing stitches may be substituted per “crocheter’s choice.”  Chains are counted as stitches in stitch counts.

New Afghan Square Design – English Garden Afghan Square

Here is my new 12″ Afghan Square Pattern – Called English Garden Afghan Square.  I was inspired by lovely formal gardens and the misty bright colors of Scheepjes Stone Washed XL.  This design is currently for sale on Ravelry and would look wonderful as a full afghan.  I was thinking of switching up the colors on each block but using the same pattern for all squares.

The pattern is suitable for the intermediate crocheter or adventurous beginner.  There are a few rounds which require very careful pattern-reading but it’s fun with a satisfying result.  I am presenting this block as a guest designer on Margaret MacInnis’ Ravelry board, where we are CAL’ing to 12″ afghan blocks in her BAMMM SHAZAAM 2016 CAL.  Check it out!  Here is a discount coupon code to take $3.00 off the price, good until end of 2016.  BAMMM2016

Finishing our Afghan Block CAL

There are many options when it comes to joining our afghan blocks.  I am lagging behind but I plan to put the border from “Fantastic” Block on all the blocks and then just slip stitch the blocks together.  I love to slip stitch through the front loops on the front side of the work and almost always use this join, especially when I do not want to distract from the design of the block.

slip stitch join 1slip stitch join 2slip stitch join 3slip stitch join 4

When I first started joining blocks in afghan swaps I would add rounds of dc and sc in pretty color combinations to tie everything together.  Simple but effective, and I think fringe is underrated.  🙂

xmas swap ghan

A favorite and classic join is Priscilla Hewitt’s “Flat Braid Join.”  Be careful at the corners; that part always trips me up!  There are video tutorials out there for this method.

My designer friend Margaret MacInnis has done several tutorials on joining methods.  Her “No Hook Out” method is a favorite, but check out her other tutorials.

Sandra at Crochet Cabana has a great description of a “Join As You Go.”  Love this.

So there are many great resources out there for joining your blocks, and each time you finish an afghan you will improve your skills.

What are you crocheting/knitting?

What are we crocheting/knitting now in January?  I’m waiting for the yarn packs for our next Crochet-A-Long to be ready. It is going to be a re-working of my Garden State Afghan and will be a free pattern given out over a period of 8 weeks. Here is a sneak peek:

Planning future projects – I have a unique (paid) design coming up to rival Modern Blanket of Flowers in the beauty/style/ease of execution/fun department. Can’t wait to finish. Then our Summer 2016 free Mystery-A-Long is in the thinking stage and it will be awesome.

If you are interested in another afghan Block Crochet A Long, my good friend designer Margaret MacInnis is running a CAL on her Ravelry board and will be featuring a new block from “moi” in March. Get in on the fun with her group on Ravelry.  Her new Facebook page is  up now and she’s working on a blog.  Give her a “like” and tell her I sent you.  ;p
