Enlargement for worsted/aran weight will result in approximately 56” (142 cm) circle diameter. This version has not been tested in the Super Bulky Weight so I am not sure how much yarn it will require.

Glad to see you all enjoying the pattern so far. At this point I am planning for 5 weeks of instructions. The first 4 weeks will complete one skein of the Caron Anniversary Cakes yarn; the fifth week will expand on the pattern for those using a thinner yarn and I’m not certain yet on how much yarn it uses.
If you look to the right on your laptop or scroll down on your phone, I am using a new email program to update you when there is a new blog post. Please subscribe; this will only be used for blog updates, news of new patterns, crochet and yarn news, yarn sales, and crafty things of interest and you can unsubscribe at any time.
You can use the Print Friendly button to print the pattern. Click on the title of this post and a new page will open and you will see a Print Friendly button at the end of the post. I will publish the full pattern on Ravelry and Etsy as a paid pattern if you would like to have a downloadable PDF.
Note: At this point the giant skein was collapsing so I balled up the yarn according to color. I had 2 balls each of the 5 colors (but still used the two similar oranges as one color.) From here on out I used two sections of each color. So Rounds 23 – 26 use two sections of Color A, etc.
Round 23: Join Color A with sl st in any ch-5 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 1) in same sp, [(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 1) in next ch-5 sp] 47 times, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (192 dc, 96 ch-1 sp)
Round 23: Join Color A with sl st in any ch-4 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 1) in same sp, [(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 1) in next ch-4 sp] 47 times, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (192 dc, 96 ch-1 sp)
Round 24: Sl st in next st and in ch-1 sp, (ch 1, sc) in same sp, [ch 1, sk 2 st, (CL2, ch 2, CL2) in ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk 2 st, sc in ch-1 sp] 47 times, ch 1, sk 2 st, (CL2, ch 2, CL2) in ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk 2 st, sl st to first sc. (96 CL2, 48 sc, 48 ch-2 sp, 96 ch-1 sp)
Round 25: Sl st in ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, [3 sc in ch-2 sp, (sc in ch 1 sp) twice] 47 times, 3 sc in ch-2 sp, sc in ch 1 sp, sl st to first sc. (240 sc)
Round 26: Ch 1, sc in same st, (ch 3, sk 3 st, sc in next st) 59 times, ch 3, sk 3 st, sl st to first sc, fasten off. (60 sc, 60 ch-3 sp)
Round 27: Join Color B in any ch-3 sp with sl st, ch 3 (counts as dc), 3 dc in same sp, [ch 1, 4 dc in next sp] 59 times, ch 1, sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (240 dc, 60 ch-1 sp)

NOTE: I designed this mandala for one cake of Caron Anniversary Cakes yarn. I chose to cut the yarn after each color change, but I designed it to have very little waste. If you choose not to cut the yarn it will look a little different but have the same general look. For Round 1, I began with the start of a new color. Starting with Round 23, the skein was beginning to collapse so I balled up the remaining yarn and used two sections of each color in sequence. In this colorway, the two orange colors are so similar I used them as one color. If you use a different colorway keep in mind that I did not cut the yarn between color 4 and 5 (the two very similar oranges.)
Tip: *Working with the cake yarn, the round will end with a little left of the color you are using. I either cut the yarn or worked a slip stitch in the back loops for 10 or 20 stitches to hide, then started with the new color. Of course, you can ignore color changes (where I indicate “fasten off”) and just keep working for a very similar look.

Next CAL on the Facebook Group and Ravelry Board – I am calling it Anniversary Mandala for my wedding anniversary this month! This is an easy mandala using one full cake of Caron Anniversary Cakes yarn – I used colorway Peach Part-ay. The yarn is a Super Bulky Weight and it has 1061/1000g in one huge squishy skein. I had fun working with this yarn and it worked up quickly using an L (8.00 mm) hook. It is 50″ across so a nice size for a lap blanket. If you use a thinner yarn it will be smaller. You can get the yarn at Michaels; there is a 20% coupon through the end of October. I get a small commission if you purchase through this or any links on my blog.
The pattern will be free here on the blog starting October 22, 2020. I will release the instructions over 4 weeks. If you wish to purchase the full pattern on Ravelry or Etsy it will be available for sale.
