Belated best wishes for Independence Day in the US – this week we have Patriotic Plaid Square by Cylinda Mathews of Crochet Memories.com. I was lucky enough to participate in one of Cylinda’s Crochet Alongs a few years back and now she is kindly returning the favor.  Patriotic Plaid is an interesting twist on the granny square, and really enjoyable to stitch.

Happy Canada Day!  This week we feature Canada Square by Tania Leis of Ontario, Canada.  Tania has created a fun sampler block celebrating the Provinces of Canada.  You will enjoy this very well-thought out pattern from a new designer; I look forward to seeing more from Tania!  Tania is releasing the pattern in her Ravelry Store and also created a You-tube video. This week I am excited to feature the work of a crochet artist who specializes in afghan squares, Shelley Husband of spincushions.com.  Shelley has provided Sydney Afghan Square for us, and it is a lovely addition to our collection.  Shelley has a recent book of granny squares which is a must-see, called Granny Square Flair, which is widely available.  Some other favorites from Shelly are the GREG Mystery Afghan, and the Mayan Blanket.

This week I am excited to feature the work of an inventive crochet artist from the Netherlands, Ineke Mooijenkind, called BAW Dream Square.  Ineke will release the pattern on Monday morning in her Ravelry Designer Store; please allow for time differences.  This block is beautiful and well-written and will excite you with some new techniques!  I had never tried the folding stitch and it makes quite a stunning effect. Ineke has other beautiful patterns available on Ravelry such as Something Magic and Angel Wings.

This week I picked a personal favorite by a favorite designer, Hayton Block by Melissa Green. Melissa will be back in the CAL later in the year with a new design, and I’m really looking forward to that, but I had an opening this week and love this Block! To keep in line with the stitch counts for this CAL, I substituted (dc, ch-1, dc) for the corners on the final round. Melissa is a prolific designer, and all her patterns can be found in her Ravelry store. Be sure to check out Veronica’s Rose and Cocoa Puff.
