Summer Mosaic – Mystery Afghan 2015 – August 1st

Summer Mosaic

For the fifth year, I am happy, proud, and excited to present the JulieAnny’s Mystery Afghan crochet-along. Thank you to all who purchase my patterns throughout the year and welcome to all who are new to my work.

This afghan is called Summer Mosaic and was inspired by the bright and hot summer sun shining down on colorful mosaic stepping stones.  Construction is mostly easy, with some post stitches and popcorn stitches, but very doable for an advanced beginner crocheter.

The first clue for the Mystery’ghan will be released August 1, 2015.  You can download the first mini-clue NOW on Ravelry using Coupon Code JulieYeagerDesigns.com. Once you’ve downloaded this first mini-clue, subsequent clues will be added as pattern updates and you can pick them up and they will remain in your Ravelry library at no charge.  At the conclusion of the Mystery CAL, about two months, the pattern will be available to newcomers as a paid pattern.  (Edit:  Pattern will remain free with Code until September 30, 2015.)

The afghan will be a 48″ x 72″ (122 cm x 182 cm) rectangle, but there will be an option to make a smaller throw at 48″ x 48″ (122 cm x 122 cm.)  Yarn packs in the suggested yarn Scheepjeswol Stone Washed XL are available for purchase at www.deramores.com now  – here are some links – UK large pack or UK medium pack.  There is free shipping and no sales tax to the US – US Large Pack  and US Medium Pack . For other countries there is a pull-down menu on the website. Stone Washed is a dream to work with!

  3. I was wondering if it was OK to substitute Moonstone for Crystal Quartz. I have oodles of Moonstone but not one skein of Crystal Quartz.

  5. I am so excited, I have downloaded the first clue for the CAL but I am having issues with the yarn. Can you please verify for me if the yarn is a size 4? I am guessing this since it suggests a 5mm needle/hook on their website. I will have to find a yarn locally since their site does not seem to do anything when I put in my zip code.
    Can you help me out?

    1. Scheepjes Stone Washed XL is a cotton/acrylic blend and It is classified as a Chunky weight. The colors are lovely and the yarn is soft and feels like a dream running through your fingers. I have been using it with an I or J hook (5. 5 mm or 6.0 mm) so I think it works more like an aran weight/heavy worsted. I am in the US and have ordered many times from Deramores and received my yarn quickly (week or so.)

  7. Where is the clue to download? I only see the pattern for sale on Ravelry, not a clue?

      When I went to the buy it now option the code was invalid, am I doing something wrong?

    2. Bonnie, there is a coupon code here on the blog in the first post. You go to to Ravelry to the pattern page where it is for sale. On the pattern page, hit the button at the top right that says Buy it Now and you will get a pop-up for ravelry downloads. In the lower left of this box there is a spot for “use a coupon code”; hit that box. Then enter the code and hit apply. The price in the basket will come down to “free” and you will follow the prompts to download. 🙂

        1. Annette, when you go to the Ravelry pattern page, click “Buy it Now” and a new tab will open. On this there is a spot in the lower left side where it says “use coupon code.” Put in the code and hit “apply” and the price will be brought down to zero, then you can follow the prompts to download it.   8. Hi Julie — I’m sooo excited to get started that I went to Deramores to put the colors in my wishlist (to keep track). The Deep Amethyst is not an XL (811) and neither is the Yellow Jasper (809). Are these the correct numbers? Do you think they will give a discount when purchased as a bundle? Thanks again!!

    1. They are definitely available in XL as I have them right here in my hand. 😛 Maybe Deramores is out of stock. They are supposed to be putting together kits so let me see if I can get any more information. Not sure about a discount; I think I do see them giving discounts sometimes for bundles! I will check on it.

      1. I checked with Scheepjeswol today and apparently Deramores had a problem with the website yesterday but I am assured that the yarn packs will be up soon.

    2. I know I saw somewhere the list of Scheepjeswol Stone Washed XL colors but can’t find it now. What are the colors to be used?

    1. Yes, I should have said v.2 as it was my second version after I added the “American Terms” part. There is only one mini-clue. Now I’m on version 3 and I sent an update.

  11. My first KAL. The teensy image of one of the squares (rounds?) looks really beautiful and shows a lot of promise for the finished project. Looking forward to it.

  12. Thank you for the opportunity. I was wondering about the hook suggested – on Ravelry it says I 5.5 but the mini clue says J 6. Wondering which is correct

    1. Ooh, good question! I personally used an I 5.5 but I am a loose crocheter so I am recommending a J 6.0. I will change the pattern page. I have a gauge measurement after 6 rounds so that will give you an idea if you are matching my gauge.

  13. I have tried several times to use the coupon code (Summer-Time ~ SUMMER-TIME ~ summer time) all to no avail !! What am I doing wrong ?????

    1. It is SUMMERTIME all one word, all in caps. What is the message you are getting? Not sure what is wrong, it has been working all day. Please try again.

  14. I can’t figure out how to buy the yarn packs on Demores. Is it a yarn pack under Julie Yeager’s name? Is it a standard color pack? It seems like others are clear so I must be missing something. Thank you for taking a minute to try to help me understand.

    1. I find it by going to the yarn tab and scrolling to Scheepjeswol. I think it is on the bottom of the first page or the second page. Thanks for trying! Yes my name is in the description but the title is Scheepjes Summer Mosaic Mystery Afghan.

  15. Went to Ravelry’s cue and downloaded pattern. So far so good. Seems like it’ll be exciting.However, I went to Deramores site to order my yarn. After ordering, I emailed them within 15 minutes of ordering to cancel so I could make a change. Yes, I have an account set-up with them which one can check order status. They have yet to rely. So American crocheters, it’s best to order local. It’s so not worth the aggravation. Also be aware of rates. I ordered $70 worth of yarn and when converted, it came out to $130. Mind you, the total when placing order never appeared. It will appear when they send you your invoice via e-mail. I won’t do business with them anymore.

    1. I’m really sorry you were disappointed, Mieche. I will try harder to emphasize that the Deramores website is UK based and you can click on the flag of your country to have the prices displayed in your currency. 🙂 Julie

  16. Hi Julie, I received my yarn from Deramores today and I am very disappointed. The colors you show in your picture and the colors on the webpage are no where near the colors that I received. The yarn is very drab and colors are very muted. For example the teal you used is not in the kit at all. The teal they sent is very similar to the main color with very little variation. It may have a little tinge of green in it, but not much. I am just wondering if you know of anyone else having this problem. Since the yarn was an investment to do your beautiful crochet along, I don’t know what to do. Any suggestions? Actually now that I am looking I did not receive any teal at all. I am so sad.

  17. i ordered the Scheepjeswol Stone Washed, but some how I ordered the fingerling and not the XL. The USPS wanted about 85.00 to return it for an exchange. I decided to just keep it and try to work with it. Do you think this yarn will work for the design? I realize it will be much smaller and more like a baby blanket. I was SO upset. I really wanted to try the Scheepjeswol Stone Washed XL.

    1. I don’t think the regular Stone Washed is actually fingering, it is a little thinner than dk maybe but you can definitely make it work! Use a 5.00 mm hook (US 8).

  18. I’m an admin from CAL – Crochet A Long on Facebook and I posted about your Mystery CAL. A member from Germany said that the coupon code did not work for her on Ravey. Do you have any idea why by chance?

    1. No I do not. I recently changed the code but if she went through the blog, got the code, went to Ravelry there should be no problem. Hundreds of people from all countries downloaded it in the past few days. Thanks for the recommendation! Tell her to keep trying, maybe Rav was busy.

  19. I’ve spoken with the woman from Germany and she was able to get the code to work the next day. So it must have been a ravelry issue. There is so much excitement about your CAL on our page!!! I can’t wait to try out this yarn! Thanks for your help and thanks for this wonderful CAL!

  21. Hi. Thank you!! I’m from South Africa and we don’t have the stonewash here. Can I replace it with Stylecraft DK or Chunky perhaps?

    2. Yes, that would be fine. The DK will make a smaller afghan but you could enlarge later if desired.

  24. I apparently bought the summer magic pattern twice so do I still have to wait for all the clues I prepfer to see all directions and I thought that by buying it would allow me to have the complete patterns with pictures.

Enter the coupon code and hit apply. The price will come down to zero, and you will follow the prompts to get a download link. Right now Clues 1, 2, and 3 are available for download, and updates will be sent every week with the next Clue.

    Is there a countingpattern drawing (chart) available?
    I have the whole pattern but i am dutch and do not understand everything while translating.
    A chart would help me out.
