Week Six

This week we finish the Concentric Squares and add the border rounds, and add the final border.

Pattern is written in U.S. terms.

–  Ch-3 and ch-4 at beginning of round/row will count as dc/tr throughout.

–  Magic Ring, invisible joins, air crochet, and other matters of technique are “crocheter’s choice.”

– All rounds/rows will be worked on the right side (RS) except for two border rounds which are indicated as wrong side (WS.)

Round 15:  Join C (F) with sl st to any corner, ch 3, dc in same sp, 2 dc in each ch 1 sp around. Sl st to top of beg ch-3.  (176 dc.)  

Round 16:  Ch 3, (dc, tr) in same st as join,[(tr, 2 dc) in next st, dc in next 42 st, (2 dc, tr) in next st] three times, (tr, 2 dc) in next st, dc in next 42 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3.   (192 st.)  

Round 17:  Sl st to first corner tr, ch 3, (dc, tr) in same st , [(tr, 2 dc) in next st, dc in next 46 st, (2 dc, tr) in next st] three times, (tr, 2 dc) in next st, dc in next 46 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3.   (208 st.)  

Round 18:  Sl st to first corner tr, ch 3, (dc, tr) in same st , [(tr, 2 dc) in next st, dc in next 50 st, (2 dc, tr) in next st] three times, (tr, 2 dc) in next st, dc in next 50 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3.  Fasten off. (224 st.)

Block Border  

Use the same border pattern for all six (nine) motifs, using colors per chart.

RS – Right Side

WS – Wrong Side

Border Round 1: (RS) Join Color A with sc in 2nd tr of any corner, sc in same st, (sc in next 55 st, 3 sc in next st) 3 times, sc in next 55 st, sc in same st as beg sc, sl to beg sc.  Ch 1.  Turn work.  (232 st)

Border Round 2:  (WS) (Sc, tr, sc) in same st as join, [(tr in next st, sc in next st) 28 times, tr in next st, (sc, tr, sc) in next st,] three times, (tr in next st, sc in next st) 28 times, tr in next st, sl st to beg sc.  Fasten off. (240 st)

Border Round 3: (WS)  Join Color B with sc in any corner tr, (tr, sc) in same st,  [(tr in next st, sc in next st) 29 times, tr in next st, (sc, tr, sc) in next st,] three times, (tr in next st, sc in next st)  29 times, tr in next st, sl st to beg sc.  Fasten off. Turn work. (248 st)

Join

Lay out blocks and join in desired arrangement.   I slip stitched through the back loops using Border Round 3 color.  You could single crochet or slip stitch through the back or front loops or whipstitch the blocks together.

Final Border

Round 1: Join Color C with sl st in any st.  Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in next st and in each st around, with (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) at the corners.  If you come to a “dip” between squares you can use a dc or a dc2tog instead of an hdc to even out.  Sl st to top of beg ch-2, fasten off.

Round 2: Join Color G with sl st in any st.  Ch 4, tr in each st around, with 5 tr in each corner sp.  Sl st to top of beg ch-4.  Fasten off.

May Morning Only

Clouds

Using Color A, make 4 medium circles (Rounds 1 – 6) and 6 small circles (Rounds 1 – 3.)  Sew to afghan as pictured, with 2 medium and 3 small circles per cloud.

Round 1:  Ch 4 , join with sl st to form ring.  Ch 3, 11 dc into ring, sl st to third ch of beg ch-3.  (12 dc.)

Round 2:  Ch 3, dc into same st as join, (2 dc into next st) 11 times. Sl st to third ch of beg ch-3.   (24 dc)

Round 3:  Beg bobble, (sc in next st, bobble in next st) 11 times, sc in last st, sl st to top of first bobble.  (12 bobbles and 12 sc.)

Round 4:  Ch 3, dc into top of same bobble, (2 dc into sc, 2 dc into top of bobble) 11 times, 2 dc into last sc, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (48 st.)

Round 5:  Ch 3, dc into same st as join, (dc in next 3 st, 2 dc in next st) 11 times, dc in next 3 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (60 st.)

Round 6:  Ch 3, dc into same st as join, (dc in next 4 st, 2 dc in next st) 11 times, dc in next 4 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3, fasten off. (72 st.)

 

Flower Stems and Leaves

Using Color D, make 3 and sew to design as pictured.  Twist the stem once or several times as desired.

Picot:  Ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1

Row 1: Ch 60. Working in back loops only of chain, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 11 st, (ch 2, sl st in next 19 st) twice, ch 2, sc in next 9 st, ch 1, turn.

Row 2:  Sl st in front loops only next 7 st, sk 2 st, [(4 dc, 2 tr, picot, 2 tr, 4 dc) in ch-2 sp, sk 2 st, sl st in next 15 st, sk 2 st] twice, (4 dc, 2 tr, picot, 2 tr, 4 dc) in ch-2 sp, sk 2 st, sl st in next 10 st, fasten off, leaving long tail for joining.  The leaves are all on the same side of the stem, but you can twist the stem while applying it to the design.
