This week we begin the Concentric Squares.

Pattern is written in U.S.terms.

–  Ch-3 and ch-4 at beginning of round/row will count as dc/tr throughout.

–  Magic Ring, invisible joins, air crochet, and other matters of technique are “crocheter’s choice.”

–  All rounds/rows will be worked on the right side (RS) except for two border rounds which are indicated as wrong side (WS.)

Concentric Square Part 1 Color Chart

Motif 3:   Concentric Square

Round 1:  With F (D), ch 4, join with sl st to form ring. (Alternatively, begin with Magic Circle.)  Ch 3, 11 dc in ring, sl st to top of beg ch-3.  (12 dc)

Round 2:  Ch 4, 2 dc in same st as join, [dc in next st, (2 dc, tr) in next st, (tr, 2 dc) in next st)] x 3, dc in next st, (2 dc, tr) in next st.  Sl st to top of beg ch-4.  (28 st, 7 per side)

Round 3:  Ch 4, 2 dc in same st as join, [dc in next 5 st, (2 dc, tr) in next st, (tr, 2 dc) in next st)] x 3, dc in next 5 st, (2 dc, tr) in next st.  Sl st to top of beg ch-4.  (44 st, 11 per side)

Round 5:  Join D(C) with sc in corner sp (between the tr,) ch 1, sc in same sp,[(ch 1, sk 1 st, sc next st) 7 times, ch 1, sk 1 st, ( sc, ch 1, sc) in corner sp (between the tr)] three times, (ch 1, sk 1 st, sc next st) 7 times, ch 1, sk 1 st, sl st to beg sc. Fasten off.

Round 6: Join B (B) with sl st in any corner ch-1 sp, ch 3 (counts as hdc and ch 1), hdc in same sp, (ch 1, hdc in skipped st in round 4, working around and enclosing the ch-1 of Round 5) 8 times, ch 1, (hdc, ch1, hdc) in corner ch-1 sp] three times, (ch 1, hdc in skipped st in round 4, working around and enclosing the ch-1 of Round 5) 8 times, ch 1, sl st to 2nd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

Round 7: Join E(A) with sl st to any corner, ch 3 (counts as dc),  2 dc in next ch-1 sp and each ch-1 sp around, with 2 dc in corner spaces. Dc in same sp as beg, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (80 dc.)

Round 8:  Ch 4, 2 dc in same st as join, [dc in next 18 st, (2 dc, tr) in next st, (tr, 2 dc) in next st)] x 3, dc in next 18 st, (2 dc, tr) in next st.  Sl st to top of beg ch-4.  (96 st, 24 per side)

Round 13: Join D(C) with sc in corner sp (between the tr,) ch 1, sc in same sp,[(ch 1, sk 2 st, sc next st), (ch 1, sk 1 st, sc next st) 18 times, ch 1, sk 1 st, ( sc, ch 1, sc) in corner sp (between the tr)] three times, (ch 1, sk 2 st, sc next st),(ch 1, sk 1 st, sc next st) 18 times, ch 1, sk 1 st, sl st to beg sc. Fasten off.

Block Border

Use the same border pattern for all six (nine) motifs, using colors per chart.

This week we begin the Sun Squares. This is the most difficult of the motifs because of the spike stitches but with careful counting and stitch markers in Round 12, it becomes easier.

Round 2:  Join B (A) with sc in any sc.  Sc in same st.  2 sc in each of the next 9 st.  Sl st to first sc. (20 sc)

Round 3:  Ch 1, sc in same st as join.  (Dc in next st, sc in next st) nine times.  Dc in next st, sl st to first sc.  (20 st)

Round 4:  Ch 1, (dc in sc, sc in dc) ten times, sl st to first dc, fasten off or hold to back. (20 st)

Round 5:  Join D (F) with sc in any st.  Sc in same st.  2 sc in each of the next 19 st.  Sl st to first sc. Fasten off or hold to back. (40 sc)

Round 6:  Join B (A) with sc in any st. (Dc in next st, sc in next st) 19 times.  Dc in next st, sl st to first sc.  (40 st)

Round 7:  Ch 1, (dc in sc, sc in dc) 20 times, sl st to first dc, fasten off or hold to back. (40 st)

Round 8:  Join D (F) with sc in any st.  Sc in same st.  2 sc in each of the next 39 st.  Sl st to first sc. Fasten off or hold to back. (80 sc)

Round 9:  Join B (A) with sc in any st. (Dc in next st, sc in next st) 39 times.  Dc in next st, sl st to first sc.  (80 st)

Round 10:  Ch 1, (dc in sc, sc in dc) 40 times, sl st to first dc, fasten off. (80 st)

Round 11:  Join D (F), with sl st in any st, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st as join, (dc in the next 19 st , 2 dc in next st) three times, dc in next 19 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (84 st)

Round 12:  Ch 3, dc in same st as join, (dc in the next 6 st, 2 dc in the next st) 11 times, dc in the next 6 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3.  Fasten off.  Mark the back loop of the first dc after an increase. (96 st)

Round 13:  (* Note:  To keep you on track, the fourth spike dc of each set is being made into the same st in Round 11 that the Round 12 increase stitch was made. If desired, mark every 8^th st.)

Working in front loops only, join A (D) with sc in marked stitch. (Leave marker.) Sc in next 4 st, [spike dc into next st in round 11, spike dc into next st in round 10, ch 4, spike dc into same st in round 10 as last spike dc, spike dc into next st in round 11 (See Note*), sc in (front loops only!) next 5 st in round 12] ten times, spike dc into next st in round 11, spike dc into next st in round 10, ch 4, spike dc into same st in round 10 as last spike dc, spike dc into next st in round 11.  Join with sl st to first sc. Round 14:  Ch 1. Working through both loops, sc in same st and in next 4 st, [skip 2 st, (6 dc, ch 3, sl into 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, 6 dc) into ch-4 loop, sk 2 st, sc in next 5 st] 10 times, skip 2 st, (6 dc, ch 3, sl into 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, 6 dc) into ch-4 loop, sk 2 st, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.  (144 dc, 60 sc, 12 ch-3 sp)

Round 15:  (All stitches are worked into Round 12, behind the petals of Rounds 13-14.) With C (B), join with sl st to back loop of marked st of Rd 12. (Remove marker.) Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in blo of next 3 st, 2 dc in blo of next st, [sk next st, 2 dc in both loops of center st behind petal in Rd 12, sk next st,  2 dc in blo of next st, dc in blo of next 3 st, 2 dc blo of next st] 10 times, sk next st, 2 dc in center st behind petal in Rd 12, sk next st.  Sl st to top of beg ch-3. (108 dc)

Round 16:  Ch 3, dc in same st, (dc in next 8 st, 2 dc in next st) 10 times, dc in next 8 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3.  (120 dc)

Round 17:  Ch 3, dc in each dc, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (120 dc)

Round 18:  Ch 3, dc in same st BUT as you form this second dc pick up top loop of center point of petal below as follows:  YO, place hook in top loop of center of petal, place hook into the st on Rd 17 and work rest of dc as usual.  (Dc in next 9 st, 2 dc in next st picking up petal with second dc) 11 times, dc in next 9 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3.  (132 dc)

Round 19:  Ch 3, dc in same st, (dc in next 10 st, 2 dc in next st) 11 times, dc in next 10 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3.  (144 dc)

September Morning CAL

Week One

Welcome to our Crochet-a-Long to September Morning Afghan.  The pattern will be offered here on the blog at no charge over the next six weeks and will remain posted free for at least a year.  Please print out with the print-friendly button if you wish to save the pattern.  The pattern is available in my Ravelry Store at new low price of $4.99 if you wish to purchase and keep in your Ravelry library.

This afghan was formerly presented as a Mystery Afghan in 2012.  I have adjusted color placement a little and clarified wording to be more in style with my current patterns but the old pattern is perfectly fine and has one hundred finished objects posted on Ravelry if you would like to see inspiration.

The afghan consists of three separate motifs – extra large granny squares – and you will be making six squares if using aran weight yarn and nine squares if using dk weight yarn.  Each motif is bordered with the same three rounds and a simple join and border finishes your afghan with ease.  In aran weight yarn, the finished afghan is about 50″ x 72″, and in dk weight yarn the size is about 56″ x 56″.

Suggested Hook:  DK/Size G – 6 (4.0 mm); Aran/Size H – 8 (5.0 mm); but use whatever hook size that is suitable for your yarn and gives you the afghan drape that you like.

–  Ch-3 and ch-4 at beginning of round/row will count as dc/tr throughout.

–  Magic Ring, invisible joins, air crochet, and other matters of technique are “crocheter’s choice.” –  All rounds/rows will be worked on the right side (RS) except for two border rounds which are indicated as wrong side (WS.)

Abbreviations:

Yo – yarn over

Beg – beginning

Ch – chain

St – stitch

Sl – slip

Dc – double crochet

Rem – remaining

Sc – single crochet

Bobble Rings Square Part 1

Make 2 motifs for aran, 3 motifs for dk, changing colors as per appropriate chart

Special stitches

Bobble stitches are worked on RS.  Push them through to the front if necessary.  The next round will help them pop.  Work into “Top of bobble” means work into the chain that closes up the bobble.

Beginning Bobble (beg bobble):  Ch 3, (yo and insert into same st as join, pull through, yo and pull through 2 loops) 3 times, yo and pull yarn through all 4 loops on hook.  Ch 1 to close bobble.

Bobble:  (Yo, insert hook into designated st, pull through, yo and pull through 2 loops) 4 times, yo and pull yarn through all 5 loops on hook.  Ch 1 to close bobble.

Bobble Rings Color Chart Week 1

(Note:  DK afghan has 3 of each motif; aran weight has 2 each.  May Morning has 3 motifs, 2 are identical.)

Color changes in text below are for Sept Morn and Purple Passion colorway.  For others, refer to chart.

Round 1:  With E (D) ch 4 , join with sl st to form ring.  Ch 3, 11 dc into ring, sl st to third ch of beg ch-3.  (12 dc.)

Round 2:  Ch 3, dc into same st as join, (2 dc into next st) 11 times. Sl st to third ch of beg ch-3.  Fasten off or hold to back of work.  (24 dc)

Round 3:  Join D (F) with sl st in any dc, beg bobble, (sc in next st, bobble in next st) 11 times, sc in last st, sl st to top of first bobble. Fasten off or hold to back. (12 bobbles and 12 sc.)

Round 4:  Join E (D) with sl st in top of any bobble, ch 3, dc into top of same bobble, (2 dc into sc, 2 dc into top of bobble) 11 times, 2 dc into last sc, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (48 st.)

Round 5:  Ch 3, dc into same st as join, (dc in next 3 st, 2 dc in next st) 11 times, dc in next 3 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (60 st.)

Round 6:  Ch 3, dc into same st as join, (dc in next 4 st, 2 dc in next st) 11 times, dc in next 4 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (72 st.)

Round 7: Ch 3, dc into same st as join, (dc in next 5 st, 2 dc in next st) 11 times, dc in next 5 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3. Fasten off. (84 st.)

Round 8:  Join C (C) with sl st in any dc, beg bobble in same st, (sc in next 2 st, bobble into next st) 27 times, sc into last 2 st, join with sl st to top of first bobble.  Fasten off.( 28 bobbles and 56 sc = 84 st.)

Round 9: Join E (D) with sl st in top of any bobble, ch 3 (counts as dc).  Dc in same st as join, (dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next bobble) 27 times, dc in next 2 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (112 st.)

Round 10:  Ch 3, dc in same st as join, (dc in next 13 st, 2 dc in next st) 7 times, dc in next 13 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (120 st.)

Round 11:   Ch 3, dc in each st around, sl st to top of beg ch-3.  (120 dc.)

Round 12:  Ch 3, dc in same st as join, (dc in next 9 st, 2 dc in next st) 11 times, dc in next 9 st, sl st to top of beg ch-3. Fasten off. (132 st.)

Round 13:   Join A (E) with sl st in any dc, beg bobble in same st, (sc in next 2 st, bobble in next st) 43 times, sc in next 2 st, sl st to top of beg bobble.  Fasten off. (44 bobbles and 88 sc = 132 st )

Round 14:  Join  E(D) with sl st in top of any bobble.  Ch 3, dc in same st as join. *(Dc in next 2 sc, 2 dc in next bobble, dc in next 2 sc, dc in next bobble) 10 times,* (dc in next 2 sc, 2 dc in next bobble) twice , repeat * to *, dc in next 2 sc, 2 dc in next bobble, dc in next 2 sc.  Sl st to top of beg ch-3. Do not fasten off.(156 st)
