Gentle Waves Crochet Hat

Materials
Yarn: 1 Hank Caron X Pantone (3.5 oz/100g – 127 yds/116 m) OR Red Heart Super Saver Ombre OR any worsted or heavy worsted yarn
Hook: I (5.50 mm) crochet hook
Sizes: Adult : 20” circumference and 8 ½” length
Child: 17” circumference and 7” length
Gauge: Rounds 1 – 3: 4”
Pattern uses American crochet terms. Magic ring and/or standing stitches are your choice. Ch-3 counts as dc. Color order suggestions are given using five colors, A -Brown, B – Light Grey, C – Lime Green, D – Hunter Green, E – Medium Grey.
Abbreviations
Beg – beginning BLO – back loops only Ch – chain dc – double crochet sl – slip st – stitch sp – space shell – 5 dc in one st Join with sc: Place slip knot on your hook, insert the hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook
Adult Hat (20” circumference and 8 ½” length)
Round 1: With Color A, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring, ch 3, 9 dc in ring, sl st to top of beg ch-3. (10 dc)
Round 2: (All st in Rounds 2 – 5 worked in “sp” between the stitches.) Ch 1, (2 dc in next “sp”) ten times, sl st to first dc. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 1 (2 dc in next “sp”, 1 dc in next “sp”) ten times, sl st to first dc. (30 dc)
Round 4: Ch 1 (2 dc in next “sp”, 1 dc in next two “sp”) ten times, sl st to first dc. (40 dc)
Round 5: Ch 1 (2 dc in next “sp”, 1 dc in next three “sp”) ten times, sl st to first dc, fasten off. (50 dc)
Round 6: Join Color B in any st, ch 3, 2 dc in same st, [sk 1 st, sc in next 2 st, sk 1 st, 5 dc in next st (shell)] nine times, sk 1 st, sc in next 2 st, sk 1 st, 2 dc in same st as beg, sl st to top of beg ch-3, fasten off. (70 st)
Round 7: (Back Loops Only). Join Color C with sc in BLO of 3rd dc of any shell, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc, fasten off. (70 st)
Round 8: Join Color D with sc in first st of previous round, sc in next st, [sk 2 st, shell in next st, sk 2 st, sc in next 2 st] nine times, sk 2 st, shell in next st, sk 2 st, sl st to first sc, fasten off. (70 st)
Round 9: Repeat Round 7.
Round 10: With Color E, repeat Round 8.
Round 11: Repeat Round 7.
Round 12: With Color B, repeat Round 8.
Round 13: Repeat Round 7.
Round 14-16: Repeat Rounds 8-10
Round 17: (Back Loops Only). Join Color C with sc in BLO of 3rd dc of any shell, sc in next 3 st, (sk next st, sc in next 6 st) nine times, sk next st, sc in next 2 st, sl st to first sc, fasten off. (60 st)
Round 18: Join Color B with sc in first st of previous round, [sk 2 st, shell in next st, sk 2 st, sc in next st] nine times, sk 2 st, shell in next st, sk 2 st, sl st to first sc, fasten off. (60 st)
Round 19: (Back Loops Only) Join Color D with sc in BLO of 3rd dc of any shell, sc in next st, (hdc in next three st, sc in next three st) nine times, hdc in next three st, sc in next st, sl st to first sc, fasten off. (60 st)
Round 20: Join Color E with sc in any st, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc, fasten off. (60 st)
