Kylie Bridget CAL

Thought we would do a quick shawl free CAL to get us through these stressful days. The shawl is called Kylie Bridget, named after my beautiful niece, and is triangle shaped starting from a narrow end and increasing every other row. I haven’t exactly finished my shawl yet, but I am planning on 6 skeins of Lion Brand Ferris Wheel , 3 skeins each of Cotton Candy and Vintage Carousel. You can use two shades of a self-striping yarn or any yarn you would like. I used a K hook, about 3 sizes larger than the recommended hook for this yarn, because the spike stitches make a thick fabric and I wanted some drape with a shawl, but it is definitely not a loose fabric even with the K hook. If you look at the test shawl worked by JustBecauseICan, her colors made the pattern look like houndstooth!

The pattern will be free here on the blog for a limited time, so come join with us and crochet along on my Ravelry Board or Facebook Group called “Crochet-A-Long with JulieAnny.” You can print this page or save to PDF using the print friendly button at the bottom of the page. You can also purchase a copy of the pattern on Ravelry to keep in your Ravelry library for 40% off the price of $4.99 with Coupon Code OCT40, bringing the price to $2.99.

Kylie Bridget Shawl by Julie Yeager

Yarn and Yarn Requirements

Lion Brand Ferris Wheel (85 g – 270 yards)

 A) 3 skeins Cotton Candy;  B) 3 skeins Vintage Carousel

Hook: Suggest size K (6.5), a little larger than recommended for drape

Size: Coming Soon

Notes:  Pattern uses U.S. crochet terms.  Increases are at the end of the row in the first row of a new color.  Stitch count increases by one every two rows. Use a stitch marker every 10 or 20 rows so you can count easily to keep on track. Spike stitch tip:  For a “spikier” look, work spike stitch between the spike and the sc 2 rows below rather than “into” the sc. Picking up strand not in use: I sc’d around the color not in use just for the first sc of the row. You can see in my photo that I did not pick up the strand on the first few rows and it really makes a difference. I also added a pointier starting point so my photo differs a little there.

Abbreviations and Special Stitches

ch – chain dc –  double crochet sc – single crochet sk – skein or skip sl – slip sp – space st – stitch    yo – yarn over

spk dc – spike dc – double crochet worked into designated st or sp below, drawing up even with current row

Foundation Rows:

F1: With Color A, ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 st, turn.

F2: Ch 1, sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st, changing to Color B with last yarnover, turn.

F3: Ch 1, sc first st, (working around strand of Color A with this one st) sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st, turn.

F4: Ch 1, sc in first st, (ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in next st) twice, changing to Color A with last yarnover, turn.

Pattern Repeat:

Row 1: With Color A, ch 1, sc in first st, (working around strand of Color B with this one st,) (spike dc in sc that was skipped 2 rows below, sk ch-1 sp, sc in sc) across to end, sc again in same last st, (increase made,) turn.

Row 2: Tip:  Except for first sc, all your sc will be into a spike dc.  Ch 1, sc in first st, (ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in next st) across to one st before end, sc in last st, changing to Color B with last yarnover, turn.

Row 3: With Color B, ch 1, sc in first st (working around strand of Color A with this one st,) sc in next st, (spike dc in sc that was skipped  2 rows below, sk ch-1 sp, sc in sc) across to end, sc again in same last st (increase made), turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first st, (ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in next st) across to end, changing to Color A with last yarnover, turn.  (At the end of first repeat, stitch count is 4 sc and 3 ch-1 sp)

Repeat Rows 1 – 4 until desired length. My goal is to stop when it is a triangle with two equal sides.
